With the holiday season in full force, please remember that December’s crazy schedules and demands do not have to ruin the most wonderful time of year for you.
Keep a few suggestions in mind to help stay balanced and focused.
Prioritize time for yourself
Take a few deep breaths during a stressful moment to recharge and center yourself.
Talk a walk outside. Nature-based interventions reduce stress and anxiety and promote mental and physical well-being.
Every day, try to give up one thing for that day: guilt for not going to that holiday party, tossing an old sweater in the Goodwill pile, or throwing away the junk mail on your desk. Giving up something every day will help you feel more in control.
Do something you like every day will help you enjoy the season: Watch a Holiday movie, read, listen to music, sing or hum your favorite tune, take a bubble bath, or connect with a friend. Whatever rings your holiday bell, large or small, will help you de-stress.
Communicate and Plan
Plan ahead. Keep a calendar and keep it updated as things come up. Be flexible… It’s the holidays… it will probably be revised a few times. (Warning… don’t over schedule!)
Communicate and keep others updated about your schedules and priorities. Letting people know what you are doing and thinking will help them adjust their plans and expectations about your participation. And then let go of any guilt that might come of it (see above).
Eat and sleep well.
